Bridge-Building with Data Vendors – Part 3

This week in my series on how GoldenSource collaborates with data vendors, I finish off my conversation about flexible data platforms with a close look at advanced Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) capabilities.

At the heart of multi-vendor processing lies robust ETL tooling, which is essential for managing the vast differences in protocols, formats, data structures, and field naming conventions used by data providers. Here are the five critical aspects of a powerful ETL process and its role in enabling seamless data integration.

1. Coping with Diverse Delivery Mechanisms
Every data provider has unique protocols, from standard delivery methods to proprietary systems. Advanced ETL tools must handle all of these while also accommodating differing domain value sets. For instance, aligning proprietary trading venues—whether at the exchange or down to desk level—and reconciling the myriad standard and proprietary identifiers is no small feat.

2. Overcoming Multilingual and Encoding Challenges
Handling multiple languages, character sets, and encodings is another technical necessity. Without full support for these, seemingly minor discrepancies can snowball into significant, time-consuming issues.

3. Scaling for Higher Data Volumes
Working with multiple sources naturally means managing much higher data volumes. To maintain GoldenSource’s emphasis on data quality, the platform’s performance and throughput capabilities must scale to meet these demands without compromise.

4. Addressing Historical Data Complexities
While current data often takes center stage, the need for historical data cannot be overlooked. Each provider delivers historical data differently, using unique formats and concepts. A flexible platform must ‘slot’ this data into the past appropriately, ensuring seamless integration regardless of the provider’s approach.

5. Supporting Raw, Standardized, and Consolidated Data
Different consuming systems require different types of data, ranging from raw or near-raw to fully standardized and consolidated Gold Copy data. A robust platform must offer the flexibility to deliver data in these forms—or even combine them—through a dynamic distribution layer.

GoldenSource’s ETL capabilities ensure that the intricacies of multi-sourced data integration are handled with precision, giving clients confidence in the integrity and usability of their data.

Next week, I’ll explore how our unified data model seamlessly combines a focused, detailed perspective with the flexibility to deliver the broad insights needed for informed investment decisions.
